Our technical resources XPS / ESCA analysis in a laboratory What do we mean by XPS analysis ? X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is an analytical tool used to determine the chemical composition of a material to a depth of a few nanometers (XPS was previously known as ESCA, standing for Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis). The technique consists of irradiating the surface of a sample with an X-ray beam to then study the photoelectrons generated by the interaction between the beam and the material. Studying of photoelectrons makes it possible to determine the chemical composition of the material’s surface and to determine each element’s chemical environment (chemical bonds, oxidation number…). XPS is therefore a technique used to analyze the outermost surface (depth of 3 to 10 nm) of a material, making it possible to qualitatively and quantitatively determine its composition and the chemical forms of elements present on the sample’s surface Your needs : to determine the chemical composition of a sample’s surface Whatever your field, XPS analysis can fulfil your needs for surface analysis : XPS analysis as part of the development of a new product needing important surface functionalization (surface needing to adhere to a greater assembly, surface treatment to improve resistance to corrosion, wear, abrasion, etc.). Identification of the nature of a deposit or pollutant found on the surface of a material (elemental diagnostics and chemical forms) XPS analysis of the compliance of a surface treatment applied to an alloy to provide protection from oxidation (passivation, anodization…) These surface analysis will allow you to ensure the compliance of your products and to solve your industrial problems linked to defects (corrosion, discoloration…) and identify pollutants. Our solution : to provide XPS analysis suited to your requests and to deliver quick and reliable results FILAB is a multidisciplinary laboratory providing analytical services, some of which are ISO 17025 accredited : Characterization of the elemental composition of a material’s outermost surface Elemental identification by XPS Expert failure analysis (corrosion, apparition of a stain, discoloration…) Optimization of the passivation procedure as part of a development project XPS analysis Diagnostic of the nature of a deposit or contaminant Validation of a surface treatment process (anodization, passivation…) improving specific surface properties (resistance to corrosion, wear, etc.) Demander un devis What equipment is used in XPS analysis? XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) analysis uses a variety of equipment to perform measurements and analysis. Equipment commonly used for XPS analysis includes the following: X-ray source: A piece of equipment generates X-rays, usually using an aluminum or magnesium anode. The X-rays emitted interact with the sample, causing electrons to be ejected from its surface. Photoelectron spectrum analyzer: An analyzer is used to measure the energies of electrons ejected from the sample as a result of interaction with X-rays. The most commonly used analyzers are hemisphere energy analyzers (HSA) and cylinder energy analyzers (CSA). Sample: The sample is placed in the vacuum chamber and exposed to X-rays. It may be solid materials or surfaces. The sample can be prepared by cleaning, polishing or fracturing, depending on the nature of the analysis required. Vacuum chamber: XPS analysis is performed in a vacuum chamber to avoid contamination of the sample by airborne molecules or particles. A high vacuum pressure is maintained inside the chamber during analysis. Detector: A detector is used to measure the number of electrons ejected at different energies. The most commonly used detectors are electron multiplier detectors (SEM) and microchannel anode detectors (MCP). Data acquisition and control system: A data acquisition and control system is used to control equipment, collect data and perform analysis. Specific software is used to process the data and interpret the spectra obtained. This equipment is used in combination to carry out XPS measurements, which enable analysis of the chemical components present on the sample surface, their oxidation state and their depth distribution. Differentiating between XPS analysis and XPS characterization XPS characterization and XPS analysis are common techniques in materials science and chemistry. Although both involve the use of photoelectron spectroscopy, there are some key differences. XPS characterization is used to determine the chemical elements present in a sample, their percentages and molecular structures. XPS analysis, on the other hand, is a more in-depth study of these elements, including their electron charge distribution. Ultimately, XPS characterization is useful for identifying elements in a sample, while XPS analysis provides more detailed information on their electrical behavior. By understanding these differences, researchers can make effective use of these techniques in their research.  Learn more about XPS characterization XPS characterization, or X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is a surface analysis technique widely used in materials science. It can be used to study the chemical composition, electronic structure and interactions between atoms on the surface of different types of materials, such as metals, oxides, polymers and semiconductors. This method relies on the interaction between high-energy photons and surface electrons, which are then measured to provide valuable information on material properties. XPS characterization is a non-destructive, highly sensitive technique that can be used for a variety of applications, from fundamental research to materials characterization in industry. FAQ How does XPS analysis work? XPS analysis works by irradiating the sample with X-rays, causing electrons to be ejected from its surface. The ejected electrons are then analyzed in terms of kinetic energy to determine the chemical elements present and their oxidation states. What types of samples can be analyzed by XPS? XPS analysis is applicable to a wide range of materials, including metals, semiconductors, polymers, ceramics and composites. Samples must be solid and stable under vacuum. What are the benefits of XPS analysis? XPS analysis offers advantages such as high chemical sensitivity, the ability to analyze surfaces non-destructively, the possibility of quantitative analysis and the detection of chemical species present on the surface. What are the limitations of XPS analysis? Limitations of XPS analysis include the need to prepare solid samples, the inability to analyze thick layers of materials, the influence of surface properties on results, and the complexity of data interpretation. How is a typical XPS analysis performed? A typical XPS analysis involves sample preparation, introduction of the sample into a vacuum chamber, irradiation with X-rays, collection of the ejected electrons, their analysis in terms of kinetic energy and interpretation of the data obtained. What are the applications of XPS analysis? XPS analysis is widely used in many fields, such as materials science, electronics, catalysis, corrosion, nanotechnology, surface biology and coatings research. Our services Laboratory characterization of nanomaterials by XPS Your need: characterize nanomaterials by XPS in the laboratory. Why characterize nanomaterials by XPS? First of all, the technique of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) aims to determine the elemental chemical composition of a material on a depth of a few nanometers. Indeed, the XPS consists in irradiating by a beam of X-rays the surface of a sample then to study the photoelectrons generated by the interaction between the incident beam and the material. It is then possible to determine the elemental chemical composition of the surface. For each detected element, its chemical environment (nature of chemical bonds, identification of oxidation degrees, ...) is also determined. Thus, in the context of nanomaterials, their characterization by XPS allows to determine in a qualitative or quantitative way their chemical composition as well as the nature of their chemical form. The determination of these properties is therefore a key step in the regulatory analysis required by the R-Nano regulation or the REACH regulation. FILAB supports you in your needs for XPS characterization of nanomaterials Through our three levels of services: analysis, expertise and R&D support, FILAB assists companies from all sectors in the characterization of nanomaterials by XPS. Our services Laboratory analysis of nanomaterials for the cosmetics industry Reminder: what does the EC Regulation 1223-2009 on Cosmetics state ? Mainly used as UV filters, pigments, mattifiers, rheological agents or opacifiers, nanomaterials are regularly used in cosmetic products whether that be intentionally with the aim of using their specific properties or whether it be unintentionally. The 2009 Cosmetic Regulation pays particular attention to the use of nanoparticles, nanomaterials or any other form of nanotechnology in cosmetic products.A nanomaterial is defined by the EC regulation 1223-2009 on cosmetics as an insoluble or bio-persistent material, made intentionally and characterized by one or more external dimensions, or by an internal structure, on the scale of 1 to 100 nanometers. The Cosmetics Regulation therefore states that : - Nanomaterials must be specifically labeled (must have [nano] in the ingredients list preceded by the INCI ingredient name)- Cosmetic products containing nanomaterials must be registered with the European Commission via the CPNP (articles 13 & 16) 6 months before going to marketAt the national level in France, the R-Nano declaration requires that the of nanomaterials be traceable. Whether their use is intentional or not, the use of nanomaterials  must be declared and traceable through physicochemical characterization services. Regarding the unintentional use of nanoparticles, the main suspicions surround raw materials such as metal oxides and mineral materials (TiO2, ZnO, SiO2, Fe2O3, CaCO3...). What is polymer surface characterization ? Polymer surface characterization refers to the process of analyzing and understanding the chemical and physical properties of the surface of polymer materials. The surface characteristics of a polymer can play a significant role in its performance, function, and interactions with other materials. Surface characterization allows researchers to study the topography, chemistry, and morphology of the surface at a microscopic level. The surface of a polymer material is typically different from its bulk properties, due to factors such as molecular orientation, surface roughness, and the presence of additives and contaminants. Polymer surface characterization techniques aim to provide detailed information about these differences, which can help researchers understand the behavior of the material in specific applications. Common techniques for polymer surface characterization include: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM): This technique uses a focused beam of electrons to produce high-resolution images of the surface of a polymer material. SEM can be used to study the surface morphology, topography, and microstructure of the material. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR): This technique uses infrared radiation to measure the absorption or transmission of light by the polymer material. FTIR can be used to study the chemical composition of the polymer surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS): This technique uses X-rays to excite electrons in the polymer material, which are then detected and analyzed. XPS can be used to study the chemical composition and bonding of the polymer surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM): This technique uses a sharp probe to scan the surface of the polymer material and produce a high-resolution image. AFM can be used to study the surface topography and mechanical properties of the material. Contact angle measurement: This technique involves measuring the angle between the surface of a droplet of liquid and the surface of the polymer material. Contact angle measurement can provide information about the wettability and surface energy of the material.
Sectors of activity Characterization of the passivation of medical devices Your needs: check the corrosion resistance performance of your implants What is a passivation process? Passivation is a chemical process that consists of treating the surface of a metal alloy in order to cover it with a uniform and compact layer of oxides thus improving its resistance to corrosion by acting as a barrier against external aggressive elements. Why characterize the passivation of medical devices? The surfaces of implants are the preferred sites for interactions with the biological host environments. In order to avoid adverse effects after deployment in the human body, medical devices must therefore have excellent corrosion resistance. Optimizing the corrosion resistance of medical devices is therefore essential for the biomedical field. Therefore, the FDA requires supporting data to demonstrate that a medical device has sufficient corrosion resistance. Thus, controls must be carried out in order to verify the integrity and the thickness of the treatments, the conformity of the specifications, the corrosion resistance performance, ... Our solutions: characterize your passivation treatments and evaluate their performance Our laboratory services to evaluate passivation processes For more than 30 years, our FILAB laboratory has had the know-how and complementary state-of-the-art analytical equipment to support manufacturers in the medical device sector in the characterization of passivation treatments, both in the context of control and in the framework of failure assessment and process optimization. The FILAB laboratory thus offers a multisectoral expertise in the face of several types of requests related to the passivation of medical devices: Characterization of the metallic and oxide forms of the chemical elements present on the surface of a medical device Observation of the uniformity and integrity of a surface treatment Measurement of the passivation thickness of a medical device Corrosion resistance test (salt spray test, ...) Expertise of a corrosion initiation observed on a passivated device Support for the optimization of a passivation process of a metallic implant in titanium alloy or stainless steel. For this type of service, the FILAB laboratory uses state-of-the-art analysis techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with a microprobe (SEM FEG-EDX), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) associated with corrosion tests (salt fog chamber) or even elementary analysis techniques (ICP-AES, ICP-AES, CLI)
Sectors of activity MEDICAL DEVICES : problematic adhesion of PAH on femoral head Faced with major strategic and regulatory challenges, the medical device sector is growing rapidly in France and Europe. Ensuring the quality of finished products, verifying the biocompatibility of the materials used, optimizing your processes and cleaning procedures, testing the endurance and stability of your items in specific environments, etc.: these are all daily issues for which the players in the medical device market must provide answers! Nowadays, the materials used for medical devices are multiple: metallic alloys (stainless steel, titanium, chrome-cobalt), organic materials (PEEK), ceramics, ... Their success is mainly based on their excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. Used for many years to promote tissue repair and osseointegration, bio-active ceramics are now widely used in the medical device sector. Hydroxyapatite (or HAP) is one of the most sought-after ceramics when applied by projection as a coating on orthopaedic implants. It is in this context that one of the main actors of PAH plasma spraying requested our laboratory to understand the origin of an adhesion defect of this type of coating on a metallic substrate revealed during production control tests. The expertise proposed by our laboratory consisted first of all in characterizing from a morphological point of view by Field Effect Scanning Electron Microscopy (FEG-SEM) the decohesive surface between the coating and the substrate. Chemical analysis techniques such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) were then used to highlight the potential presence of surface pollution at this failure interface. The results made it possible to rule out a possible origin of the problem associated with the spraying process and to carry out specific actions upstream of this process which made it possible to eliminate the defect. Thanks to the human skills and the complementary technical means available in our laboratory, FILAB was able to support this industrialist both from a technical point of view within the framework of the characterization of his defect and from a consulting point of view in order to solve his problem. Our services Laboratory for failure analysis in the glass industry Failed materials in the glass industry: beware of breakage! What are the problems faced by manufacturers in the glass sector? The glass industry is one of the few sectors whose manufacturing techniques are essentially based on craftsmanship. The non-standardization of production tools, the fragility of materials and the scarcity of know-how give the glass industry strong industrial constraints in the design of solid, innovative glass that respects health and environmental requirements.Flat glass, hollow glass, fiberglass or crystal, the study of their characteristics will allow companies to better control their assembly, packaging and use. This technical challenge leads manufacturers and distributors in the glass sector to call upon service providers to assist them in controlling their materials, optimizing their production process and developing effective surface treatments. The FILAB laboratory is generally solicited for two types of problems - Interactions between the packaging and its environment (appearance of an external deposit or stain, wear, oxidation, etc.) - Interactions between the packaging and its contents (migration phenomenon) In the first case, the failure generally occurs after the product has been placed on the market, alerted by customer complaints, for example, requiring a high level of reactivity in the handling of analysis. At FILAB, the investigation of this failure is built in a methodical way: 1.characterize the chemical composition of the deposit by SEM-FEG-EDX, XPS, TOF-SIMS, ICP-MS or GC-MS according to its nature (organic, mineral) 2.identify the origin of the deposit: verification of the conformity of the packaging, surface characterization, audit of the production process... 3.provide a detailed expertise and propose adapted solutions to avoid again the risks of failures: determination of the root cause, implementation of corrective and preventive actions, improvement of industrial processes, development of protective surface treatments of the packaging...  Concerning the second problem, the health issues are more important. Indeed, the possible migrations between the glass packaging and its contents can present risks for the consumer or the final user. To analyze and anticipate these phenomena, FILAB performs aging tests and then analyzes the chemical behavior of the substances present by ICP-AES or ICP-MS. The analysis results and their interpretation allow our customers to assess the risks and chemical compatibility between the packaging material - in this case, glass - and its contents. Both manufacturers and customers must therefore be vigilant in their manufacturing process in order to avoid failures related to the quality of the packaging or its use. Thus, controls upstream and downstream of the marketing will contribute to the quality of the final product. "Glass" to infinity and beyond with FILAB For many years, our laboratory has been offering its know-how in understanding and solving the problems of the glass industry. Our human and technical complementarity is a real asset for glass manufacturers.Mineral chemistry, material chemistry, organic chemistry, so many skills requested by the glass industry and gathered today in a single place in our laboratory, guaranteeing reactivity, confidentiality and performance.More than an analytical laboratory, FILAB supports you in all your R&D projects and industrial challenges in order to meet the evolutions of your sector.

Request a quote What are the analysis methodologies preconised by AAMI TIR42? AAMI TIR42 is a guidance document that provides recommendations on how to test medical device materials for chemicals that may pose a risk to patient safety. To identify and quantify these chemicals, AAMI TIR42 recommends using several different analysis methods. One of the recommended analysis methods is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which is used to separate and identify small molecules in complex mixtures. This technique involves looking at the individual components of a mixture and analyzing their physical properties to determine what they are. Another method is high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which is used to separate and identify organic molecules in complex mixtures. This technique is particularly useful for identifying chemicals that may be present in very small amounts. A third recommended analysis method is Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which is used to identify the chemical functional groups present in a material. FTIR works by analyzing the wavelengths of light that are absorbed by a sample, which can reveal the different chemical bonds present. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is another recommended analysis method. This technique is used to identify and quantify the elements present in a sample. It works by irradiating the sample with X-rays and measuring the energy of the electrons that are emitted. Finally, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) is recommended for determining the elemental composition of a sample. This technique involves ionizing the sample and measuring the wavelengths of light emitted by the excited atoms. AAMI TIR42 recommends several different analysis methods for identifying and quantifying chemicals in medical device materials, including GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, XPS, and ICP-OES. These techniques help to ensure that medical devices are safe for patient use by identifying any potentially harmful chemicals that may be present Why is it important to perform particle contamination counting according to AAMI TIR42 standards? Particle contamination counting is an important aspect of testing for medical device materials, as it can help to ensure their safety and effectiveness. AAMI TIR42 provides guidelines on how to perform particle contamination counting to detect any microscopic particles that may be present in the material. Particles can come from various sources, including the manufacturing process, the environment, or the materials themselves. They can be foreign bodies in the material, or they can be generated by the wear and tear of the device as it is used. Particle contamination can lead to a host of problems, including inflammation, thrombosis, and other adverse reactions, making it important to detect and measure the degree of contamination. AAMI TIR42 recommends performing particle contamination counting using optical microscopy, which involves examining a sample of the material under a microscope to count and categorize the particles present. The size, shape, and composition of the particles can also be assessed to determine their potential impact on the device's safety and effectiveness. By performing particle contamination counting according to AAMI TIR42 standards, medical device manufacturers can identify and quantify any particle contamination present in their materials and take appropriate action to ensure the safety and efficacy of their devices. This is especially important for medical devices that will be implanted or used in close contact with the body, as particle contamination can have serious consequences for patient health.  Why should you externalize your particle contamination counting? Externalizing your particle contamination counting can be beneficial for several reasons, particularly in ensuring that you are obtaining accurate and unbiased results. AAMI TIR42 recommends that particle contamination counting should be performed by an external testing laboratory that specializes in this type of analysis.Externalizing particle contamination counting allows for an objective evaluation of the materials. An external laboratory has no vested interest in the outcome of the analysis, which can help to ensure that the results are impartial and accurate. Additionally, external laboratories may have access to specialized equipment or techniques that are not available in-house, providing a more comprehensive and detailed analysis. It ensures compliance with regulatory requirements. External laboratories are often accredited by regulatory bodies and must adhere to strict quality control measures, ensuring that their analysis meet the highest standards. By outsourcing particle contamination counting to an accredited laboratory, medical device manufacturers can demonstrate to regulatory agencies that they are following best practices and complying with relevant standards, such as AAMI TIR42.Finally, externalizing particle contamination counting can save time and resources. Performing this type of analysis in-house requires investing in specialized equipment, training personnel, and dedicating valuable lab space. By outsourcing to an external laboratory, medical device manufacturers can free up resources to focus on other areas of product development and ensure timely and accurate results.
Our services Characterization of the rouging in laboratory You want to characterize rouging on your materials? What is rouging? Rouging is a very thin film that appears as a result of a disturbance of the outer layer of the surface of stainless steels. The formation of iron oxides and other metal oxides is thus favored and leads to the coloration of the surface.  Rouging is characterized in particular by a coloration of the surfaces of certain stainless steel equipment, from yellow to black, through orange and red, depending on the extent of the phenomenon. Why characterize the rouging on your materials? Rouging is not a spontaneous phenomenon. In fact, the appearance of rouging is characteristic of a failure generally linked to the surface treatment. It also implies that the steel loses its anti-corrosion properties and its resistance. Thus, the characterization of rouging by a specialized laboratory is essential in the optimization of your materials. FILAB supports you in the characterization of rouging on your materials Through our three levels of services: analysis, expertise and R&D support, FILAB assists companies of all sectors and sizes.  Indeed, FILAB supports you in the characterization of rouging and takes charge of the different steps of realization. Our services Analysis of rouging phenomenon in laboratory Your needs: analyze the rouging phenomena on your products What is rouging? Rouging is a phenomenon that occurs when the outer layer of the surface of stainless steels is disturbed. The formation of iron oxides and other metallic oxides (nickel or chromium) is thus favored and leads to the coloration of the surface.  A very thin film, rouging is characterized by a coloration of the surfaces of certain stainless steel equipment, from yellow to black, through orange and red, depending on the extent of the phenomenon. Why analyze the rouging phenomenon on your products? Rouging does not occur spontaneously. In other words, rouging is a symptom of surface degradation of stainless steel. It also implies that the steel is losing its corrosion resistant properties and strength. Furthermore, rouging is unstable and not an acceptable phenomenon in many processes. Indeed, the oxidation particles can detach and contaminate the possible transported products, which endangers the safety of the processes. Request a quote FILAB supports you in the analysis of rouging phenomena Through our three levels of services: analysis, expertise and R&D support, FILAB assists companies of all sectors and sizes.  Indeed, FILAB accompanies you in the analysis of rouging phenomena and takes charge of the different stages of realization. Our services Surface roughness analysis What is surface roughness? The surface of a material is a vulnerable zone where many interactions with its environment take place. It conditions, by its specific characteristics, the global performances of materials. It can impact the reliability and the solidity of a product in case of failures (corrosion, wear, adhesion, friction...).Moreover, whatever its manufacturing process, the surface is not perfectly smooth. Indeed, this can depend on various factors such as: the machining method, the tools used, the materials. These materials have many irregularities that can be called defects.  All these surface defects constitute the roughness.Shape : Deviations over long periods or non-cyclic deviationsRipples: Surface structure with longer intervals of irregularities.Roughness : Irregularities with short intervals Why is surface roughness important? Each production process has an impact on the quality of the surface and thus leads to the appearance of roughness. In this context, the FILAB Laboratory supports you in your surface roughness issues through the following services:  Roughness analysis by AFM, SEM-EDX, XPS Surface treatment analysis Morphological study of the surface Failure study Request a quote Les + FILAB Une équipe hautement qualifiée Une réactivité de réponse et de traitement des demandes Un laboratoire accrédité COFRAC ISO 17025 (Portées disponibles sur www.cofrac.com - N° accréditation : 1-1793) Un parc analytique complet de 2100m² Un accompagnement sur-mesure
Our services Analysis of the surface topography What is topography? Topography is part of a surface analysis context. Many interactions remain on a material surface. These play a major role in the behavior of the material, in order to better understand them, surface analysis is necessary. Finally, the surface topography manifests itself on three levels: Macrographic, the surface is the limit between the solid and its environmentMicroscopic, the surface presents numerous irregularities and mechanical alterations. These are superimposed on the shape defects. The "microscopic" level aims at the geometry of the roughness profileNanometrically, the surface can be schematized by an irregular stacking of atoms with a discontinuity in the arrangement of the atoms of the solid which confers to the surface atoms an intrinsic energy higher than those of the volume. Moreover, the properties and surface states of a material allow an adaptation of the manufacturing processes. What parameters are obtained from the surface topography? Topographic surface analysis is used for various applications such as: Analysis of the surface condition of a materialAnalysis of roughnessThe study of a surface defectPhase identificationStructural analysis of a surfaceEtc. FILAB supports you in your topographic analysis needs...
