# Mechanical testing: determination of toughness by the SEVNB method | ISO 23146

In many industries ([aerospace](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analysis-aeronautics-aerospace.md), [defense](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analyses-tests-defense-security-sector.md), [energy](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analysis-nuclear-energy.md), [medical devices](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analysis-medical-devices.md), and electronics), [ceramic](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/polymer-materials-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-material-testing/laboratory-ceramic-testing/) and brittle materials are used for their exceptional performance. But one key question remains: **how do we measure their resistance to [fissure](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/laboratory-analysis-failures/fissure-analysis-laboratory.md) propagation**?

This is precisely the objective of **fracture toughness determination**. Among the recognized methods, the **SEVNB** method is now a benchmark for characterizing brittle materials according to [**ISO 23146**](https://www.iso.org/fr/standard/62093.html).

### What is the toughness of a material?

Toughness (K1c) is a material’s ability to resist the propagation of an existing crack. While [hardness](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/mechanical-laboratory-test/hardness-analysis-and-measurement-laboratory.md) measures resistance to penetration, toughness determines whether a micro-crack invisible to the naked eye is likely to cause the part to fail in service.

### The SEVNB method: the accuracy of the "V-Notch"

The **SEVNB** (Single-Edge V-Notched Beam) method is acclaimed for its repeatability and accuracy on monolithic ceramics.

  The principle of the test
The test uses a parallelepiped-shaped specimen into which a very sharp V-shaped notch is machined. This notch simulates a pre-existing crack with an extremely small root radius.

- Preparation: a primary notch is cut and then refined using an abrasive paste (often diamond) to obtain a root radius of less than a few micrometers.
- Loading: the specimen is placed on a 3- or 4-point bending fixture.
- Faulting: increasing force is applied until complete failure.

   Why choose ISO 23146?
Compared to other techniques such as [Vickers](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/mechanical-laboratory-test/vickers-hardness-testing-hv-in-laboratory.md) indentation (IF), the SEVNB method offers major advantages:

- **Reliability of results**: it is less subject to variations in visual interpretation than indentation methods.
- **Adaptability**: it is applicable to a wide range of advanced technical ceramics (alumina, zirconia, carbides).
- **Conformity to standards**: it is a reference method for qualification dossiers of advanced materials (aerospace, medical, nuclear).

### FILAB laboratory's support in mechanical characterization

Machining a V-groove notch according to ISO 23146 requires high-precision metrological expertise. At the **FILAB** laboratory, we combine our expertise in metallurgy and ceramics to offer you a comprehensive service:

- **Rigorous preparation** of test specimens (polishing and precision notching).
- **Performance of bending tests** on calibrated tensile/compression testing machines.
- **Fracture surface analysis by [SEM](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-sem-scanning-electron-microscopy.md)** (Scanning Electron Microscopy) to understand the origin of the fracture.
- **Interpretation of the results** in light of the operating constraints of your parts.

### In what context should the toughness of a ceramic be measured?

**Toughness measurement is a crucial indicator for understanding a material’s behavior in the face of fissure propagation**. In many industrial environments, the presence of microscopic defects is unavoidable. The challenge, therefore, lies not only in evaluating overall mechanical strength but also in **assessing the material’s ability to tolerate these defects without sudden failure**.

Determining toughness thus helps **ensure the reliability of the design of critical components**, particularly when subjected to high mechanical stresses or harsh operating conditions. It also provides a valuable tool for **comparing different materials** or microstructures during development or qualification phases.

Furthermore, these tests provide valuable information for**optimizing manufacturing processes**, whether related to sintering parameters, heat treatments, or raw material selection. Finally, knowledge of this property allows for **anticipating the risk of failure in service** and improving the overall reliability of components.

Tenacity thus emerges as a key parameter for assessing the robustness of fragile materials and ensuring their safe use in demanding industrial applications.

#### Conclusion

Mastering toughness using the SEVNB method is essential to guaranteeing the durability of ceramic components. By complying with the requirements of ISO 23146, FILAB helps you secure your innovations and validate the conformity of your most technical materials.
