Why analyze furfuryl alcohol ?
Furfuryl alcohol is an organic compound containing a furan and a hydroxymethyl group. It is a colorless liquid that turns brown on contact with air or light and is recognizable due it its odor resembling the smell of something burning and its bitter taste.
Mainly used for the preparation of furan resins which are used in the manufacture of molds, foundry cores or adhesives, they can be used on their own or with phenol, acetone or urea to produce stronger resins for the aviation or automobile industries.
Furfuryl alcohol is an irritant and is considered as toxic when inhaled. It is now classed as a suspected carcinogen (category 3) and its use therefore requires regular monitoring.
