# Absorbable organic fluorine (AOF) laboratory dosage

## You would like to dose absorbable organic fluorine (AOF) in your products

### What is Absorbable Organic Fluorine (AOF)?

**Adsorbable Organic Fluorine** (AOF) corresponds to the **total quantity of organic fluorinated** compounds present in a water sample, capable of being **retained by an adsorbent material** (such as activated carbon) and then analyzed in the form of fluorine.

This global measurement does not attempt to identify each molecule individually, but provides a rapid and sensitive**indication of the presence of organic fluorinated substances**, such as [**PFAS**](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/chemical-analysis-laboratory/analysis-per-and-polyfluoroalkylated-substances-pfas/).

### Why measure absorbable organic fluorine (AOF)?

The growing presence of per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) and other perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), which accumulate in the environment and in the human body, is a growing concern for international health authorities. These highly stable compounds, known as “eternal pollutants” (or forever chemicals), comprise some 10,000 different substances. Their individual detection is complex.

To overcome these difficulties, the measurement of adsorbable fluoride (AOF) in water has been proposed as a screening method. It is simpler, faster and more sensitive than measuring total fluoride (TF), which includes all forms of fluorine (organic and inorganic). AOF thus provides an initial, rapid estimate of the total quantity of organic fluorine compounds present. If high concentrations are detected, targeted analyses of specific PFAS can then be carried out.

## FILAB determines the absorbable organic fluorine (AOF) in your products

### Why choose FILAB?

Faced with the growing complexity of the problems associated with fluorinated substances, the [FILAB](https://filab.fr/en/) laboratory offers its expertise to help you detect and understand these compounds in your aqueous matrices.

Thanks to its state-of-the-art [analytical equipment](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources.md) and a team of experts in analytical chemistry, FILAB is able to carry out Adsorbable Organic Fluorine (AOF) analyses rapidly, reliably and sensitively. This global approach enables us to detect the presence of organic fluorinated compounds, such as PFAS, without having to target each molecule individually.

Beyond analysis, FILAB brings you real added value thanks to its expert approach: interpretation of results, understanding the origins of contamination, risk assessment, technical recommendations… each service is designed to provide a concrete response to your industrial challenges, whether regulatory, environmental or related to product quality.

### Our technical resources for the determination of absorbable organic fluorine

The analytical technique used to determine **Adsorbable Organic Fluorine** (AOF) is based on a **combination of three main steps**:

 Adsorption on activated carbon
The water sample is first **passed over an activated carbon cartridge**, which retains (adsorbs) any organofluorine compounds present.

 Combustion or pyrolysis
The adsorbed substances are then **oxidized at high temperature** (usually by combustion or [pyrolysis](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/py-gc-ms-pyrolysis-gc-ms.md)), converting the organic fluorine into inorganic fluoride (F-).

 IC detection
The fluoride released is then quantified using the Ion Chromatography technique.
