# Leachate analysis laboratory

In chemistry, pharmaceuticals, or soil science, leachate is generated by the process of “leaching.” It is an extraction technique for soluble products using a [solvent](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solvant), especially water. Leachate refers to the residual liquid resulting from the [percolation](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percolation) of [water](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eau) through a material, particularly the soluble fraction.

## Leachate analysis: what is it for?

Leachate analysis is mainly used for environmental purposes; for example, when water flows through soil or a substrate containing toxic substances (an industrial landfill or [household waste](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9chets_m%C3%A9nagers)).

Leachate analysis also makes it possible to highlight the presence (or absence) of pollutants such as heavy metals, plasticizers, fatty acids, mineral compounds, microorganisms… Indeed, because of their significant pollutant load, leachates can be the source of contamination in groundwater, surface water, or even soil.

**Certain European regulations, such as the landfill and waste directives, require leachate treatment. These regulations are intended to prevent and reduce their harmful effects on health and the environment.**
