# Nitinol analysis according to ASTM F2063-18

## Need to validate the conformity of your Nitinol alloys according to ASTM F2063-18?

### Secure your alloys with perfect control of Nickel-Titanium

[Nitinol](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/nitinol-characterisation.md), a shape-memory and superelastic alloy, requires rigorous monitoring of its [physico-chemical](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/chemical-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-analysis-physicochemical.md) properties to guarantee its reliability. Whether for high-precision components, actuators, or demanding environments, the [**ASTM F2063-18**](https://store.astm.org/f2063-18.html) standard defines the reference criteria for wrought nickel-titanium alloys.

The **FILAB** laboratory supports you in the qualification of your materials, the validation of your supplies, and the expert analysis of your components to meet the highest industrial standards.

### Understanding the requirements of the ASTM F2063-18 standard

This standard specifies the chemical, physical, and mechanical requirements for Ni-Ti alloys. It imposes strict tolerances that guarantee the repeatability of the material’s behavior:

Chemical composition: precise balance between Nickel and Titanium.

Metallurgical purity: control of inclusions and microstructure to prevent premature breakage.

Transformation temperatures (A_f): determination of the critical point where the material returns to its initial shape.

Mechanical properties: tensile strength and elongation capacity.

## FILAB's expertise: a comprehensive approach to chemistry and materials

To validate compliance with ASTM F2063-18, FILAB utilizes a state-of-the-art analytical facility covering 5200 m²:

### Physico-chemical and thermal characterization

- Elemental analysis ([**ICP-AES / ICP-MS**](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-icp-icp-ms-icp-aes.md)): verification of alloy purity.
- Gas analysis ([**C, H, O, N, S**](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/chons-laboratory-analysis.md)): analysis by inert gas melting and combustion to monitor interstitials that affect brittleness.
- **Differential Scanning Calorimetry ([DSC](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-dsc-calorimetric.md))**: precise measurement of phase transformation temperatures.

### Examination of the structure and surfaces

- **Scanning Electron Microscopy ([SEM-FEG](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-sem-scanning-electron-microscopy/laboratory-sem-analysis-automobile-aeronautical.md))**: analysis of microstructure, secondary phases, and inclusion detection.
- **Surface characterization**: analysis of the oxide layer (passivation) and composition profile.

### Mechanical testing and reliability

- [Tensile testing](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/mechanical-laboratory-test/tensile-test-materials-laboratory.md): evaluation of mechanical performance at different temperatures.
- **[Corrosion studies](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/laboratory-analysis-deposit-contamination/laboratory-expertise-and-analysis-of-corrosion.md)**: static and dynamic behavior in specific environments.

## Our FAQ

Why is the measurement of the Af temperature so important for Nitinol?
The austenitic transformation termination temperature (Af) determines when the alloy regains its shape memory or superelastic behavior. A deviation of a few degrees from the ASTM F2063-18 specifications can render a component inoperable (loss of shape memory at operating temperature) or brittle. Dynamic temperature scanning (DTS) is the reference method for ensuring this stability.

Does ASTM F2063-18 cover finished components or only raw materials?
Originally, this standard applied to wrought products (bars, wires, tubes, plates) prior to heavy processing. However, it is now common industrial practice to refer to it to verify that the manufacturing steps (machining, heat treatment, laser cutting) have not degraded the intrinsic properties of the alloy, particularly its microstructure or transition temperatures.

What are the acceptable tolerances for impurities (H, O, N, C)?
ASTM F2063-18 is extremely strict regarding interstitial elements because they directly impact material fatigue. For example, oxygen content is generally limited to 0.05% (by mass) and hydrogen to 0.005%. FILAB uses inert gas melting analysis to quantify these elements with ppm (parts per million) precision.
