First, ISO 11890-1 is one of a series of standards that deal with sampling and testing of paints, varnishes and related products.

It specifies a method for determining the [volatile organic compound (VOC)](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/voc-analysis-laboratory.md) content of paints, varnishes and their raw materials. It can be used when the expected content of volatile organic compounds is higher than 15 % by mass. If the expected content of volatile organic compounds is greater than 0.1 % by mass and less than 15 % by mass, ISO 11890-2 applies. The ISO 11890-2 method applies when the system contains both VOCs and SVOCs, because the result obtained according to ISO 11890-1 can be influenced by the SVOCs.

In addition, the methods from ISO 11890-1 and ISO 11890-2 assume that the volatile material is water or organic material.
