### What is profilometry?

Firstly, the aim of profilometry is to **measure the relief** of a surface in order to obtain a range of information about the surface under study. 

### Why perform a profilometry analysis?

By measuring the relief of a surface, profilometry can provide information on the surface condition of a material, its [roughness](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/laboratory-surface-characterization/surface-roughness-analysis.md), the study of a [surface defect](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/laboratory-surface-characterization/laboratory-analysis-surface-defects-metal-parts.md), the identification of phases and the structural analysis of the surface. Profilometry can therefore be used to identify and solve problems of non-conformity, abnormal wear (by abrasion, corrosion or adhesion) or failure.

Profiling is therefore a key step in the characterisation and analysis of a surface.
