First of all, cracks can affect a large number of materials such as**metals, ceramics, polymers or composites.**

A **material crack refers** to the appearance of a sudden discontinuity in a material under the effect of external stresses, resulting in a loss in the reliability and strength of the product.

The characteristics of the cracks, called “[**facies**](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-sem-scanning-electron-microscopy/fracture-facies-analysis-laboratory/)“, (length, depth, speed of appearance…) allow us to know their origin.

A cracking problem in materials is caused by a strength problem and/or production defects. Thus, it is crucial to prevent the problem of cracks in materials by choosing a material adapted to its life cycle and by thorough testing at the time of manufacture.
