# Analysis and Expertise of inconel in laboratory – Metallurgical Expertise

Our laboratory is an expert in **metallurgy**and [**alloy analysis**](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/metallic-alloy-analysis-laboratory.md)**, notably Inconel**, and offers its expertise to analyze the **chemical composition and quality control of metal alloy grades.**

## Your need: carry out an Inconel alloy analysis

Inconels are superalloys based on nickel and several other [metals](https://www.futura-sciences.com/sciences/definitions/matiere-metal-3877/) such as [chromium](https://www.futura-sciences.com/sciences/definitions/chimie-chrome-4691/), molybdenum, iron [iron](https://www.futura-sciences.com/sciences/definitions/chimie-fer-721/) and [titanium](https://www.futura-sciences.com/sciences/definitions/chimie-titane-14783/). The most commonly used alloys in this family are Inconel 600, Inconel 625, and Inconel 718. They are particularly known for being extremely resistant to corrosion and heat. Inconels are used by many industries such as petrochemicals, aerospace, aeronautics, and nuclear power.

**Inconel** is used in many industrial sectors, and each Inconel grade has specific properties:

**Inconel 600** : a versatile alloy, ideal for **thermal equipment** and **aggressive chemical environments**, thanks to its high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance **Inconel 625** : highly resistant to **corrosion in marine or acidic environments**, it is used in **offshore**, **aerospace** or **chemical processing equipment**. **Inconel 718** : a precipitation-hardenable alloy, it offers **excellent mechanical strength up to 700 °C**. Perfect for **turbines, aircraft engines** and **aerospace components**. **Inconel X-750** : suitable for **springs**, **fasteners** and parts subjected to **high thermal stress**, thanks to its good creep and oxidation resistance. **Inconel 601** : stable at very high temperatures, resistant to thermal cycling, used in **industrial furnaces**, **burners** or **metal chimneys**. **Inconel 690** **Rene77**
### Analysis of Inconel composition: essential quality control

Analysis of the chemical composition of Inconel makes it possible to**verify the presence and concentration**of essential alloying elements, such as chromium, iron or titanium, thereby ensuring material compliance for safety- and performance-critical applications.

## FAQ

Why analyze an Inconel alloy?
Analysis makes it possible to:

- **Check the compliance** of a raw material or a component
- **Identify a failure** (corrosion, cracking, wear, contamination…)
- **Verify the chemical composition** in relation to standards (ASTM, AMS, ISO…)
- **Assess aging** under extreme conditions

What types of issues can be solved with these analysis?
- Abnormal corrosion in acidic or saline environments
- Composition deviation from the expected standard (e.g. Inconel 625)
- Detection of contaminants or foreign elements
- Crack assessment or mechanical failure analysis

Can the analysis be accompanied by an expert report?
Yes. In addition to the raw results, our materials engineers can **interpret the data**, **formulate failure hypotheses** and **provide recommendations** to make your processes or suppliers more reliable.

Our analysis expertise applied to Inconels
**Material compliance inspection**

- Verification of chemical composition (Ni, Cr, Mo, Nb, Ti, etc.) by **ICP-OES/MS**
- Standards analysis (ASTM B443, AMS 5662/5663, etc.)
- Identification of the actual alloy (e.g., distinguishing a 625 from a 718)

**Failure analysis**

- Observation of cracks and microstructure by **FEG-SEM + EDS**
- Investigation of intergranular corrosion or pitting (chlorides, sulfur…)
- Identification of contaminants (organic or inorganic): deposits, oxides, cross-contamination
- Surface analysis (XPS, Auger) to understand the mechanisms at work

**Aging / fatigue study**

- Observation of metallurgical changes: precipitation, embrittlement, grain growth
- XRD to monitor intercrystalline phases
- Microhardness, mechanical testing, creep analysis

**Characterization for R&D or additive manufacturing**

- Analysis of Inconel powders (morphology, size, composition, oxidation)
- Post-3D-printing inspection: porosity, surface condition, phase stability
