# Zinc analysis and expertise in the laboratory – Metallurgical Expertise

Our laboratory is an expert in **[metallurgy](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-metallurgy-steelmaking-analysis.md)**, especially in **zinc analysis**, and offers its expertise to analyze the chemical **composition and control of metals and [metal alloy](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/metallic-alloy-analysis-laboratory.md) grades**.

## Your needs: to carry out an analysis of zinc and its zinc-based alloys

### Analysis of zinc and its alloys

Using advanced analytical techniques, our laboratory delivers accurate and reliable results for every zinc analysis.

Our teams implement a fast and compliant service to ensure the quality and safety of their zinc-based products.

**Zinc** is a **light metal**, **corrosion resistant and easy to mold**, widely used in steel protection and as the basis of technical alloys:

**Pure zinc**: mainly used for **galvanizing steel** (zinc plating) to protect against corrosion (construction, automobile, metal infrastructure). **Zamak** (Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium-Copper): very fluid and stable foundry alloy, used to manufacture **complex injected parts** in **automobile**, **household** appliances, **hardware or electrical connectors.** **Brass (copper-zinc)**: combining aesthetics and mechanical strength, it is used in **faucets, musical instruments, watchmaking and decorative or mechanical parts**. **Zn-Al-Cu alloys (ex: ZA-12, ZA-27)**: used for pressure or gravity casting, they combine high mechanical strength and good coulability for the manufacture of light structural parts, gears, pumps. **Zinc anti-friction alloys**: integrated in some formulations to improve **coulability and wear resistance**, in moving parts of low load (small bearings, moulded gears).
### Analysis of zinc alloys

Zinc alloys, such as **zamak and brass**, have a variety of properties and are used in many industrial sectors.

The FILAB laboratory performs **comprehensive analysis of zinc alloy composition** to help optimize production and recycling processes or any other needs you may have as an industrial user.

We identify alloy elements and measure concentrations to meet the technical specifications of each project.

### Brass alloy composition analysis

Brass is a copper-zinc alloy, often supplemented with small amounts of other elements such as lead, tin or nickel to improve its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

The proportion of zinc in the alloy directly influences the color, hardness and malleability of brass.

The analysis of the composition of the brass makes it possible to check the quality of the material and ensure that it meets the specific requirements of each sector, in terms of durability, conductivity and resistance to mechanical stress.

## Why choose the FILAB laboratory to analyze zinc and zinc alloys?

### Our methods of analysis for zinc and alloys

## FAQ

What defects can be found on a zinc alloy part (e.g. zamak)?
The most common defects are:

- **Internal or shrinkage porosities** (molding problem)
- **Cooling or shrinkage cracks**
- **Brittle corrosion or pitting**, especially if the part is poorly protected
- **Surface pollution** (silicon, sulphur, oxides) that may affect the adhesion of the coating
- **Paint or galvanizing peel** or adhesion defects

How to control a galvanizing defect on galvanized steel?
It is possible to analyse:

- **The thickness of the zinc coating** (measured by X-ray fluorescence or metallographic cut)
- **The morphology of the layer** (SEM)
- **The adhesion of the coating** (mechanical tests or impact observations)
- **The presence of interfacial defects**: delamination, oxides, bubbles...

Is zinc recyclable?
Yes, zinc is highly recyclable in the form of:

- Of galvanizing waste
- Of castings (zamak, brass)
- From industrial residues (ash, dust)

Why analyze a zinc alloy?
The analysis provides:

- **Check material compliance** (composition, alloy quality)
- **Identify defects or failures** (porosity, corrosion, pollution)
- **Assess castings** in case of breakage, abnormal wear or dimensional variation
- **Characterizing metal powders** (additive manufacturing, recycled zamak, etc.)
