# Laboratory analysis of chitosan

## As an industrialist you wish to carry out the analysis of chitosan present in your products

### Chitosan in a few words

Chitosan is a biopolymer derived from chitin. It is the main component of the shell of crustaceans such as crabs, shrimps and lobsters. This natural polymer is obtained from chitin by a process of deacetylation. During this process the acetyl groups are removed from the molecule to form chitosan.

### Why perform a chitosan analysis?

Determining the properties of chitosan is essential in **production** process or end **product control issues**. A complete knowledge of the properties of your biopolymers is also necessary to anticipate its evolution in its **environment of use**.

Indeed, the **degree of polymerization** (proportional to the **molar mass**) of chitosan determines its **mechanical and thermal properties**.

Moreover, the **crystallinity**, the **cross-linking** or the glass transition and **melting temperatures** are also involved in the determination of the properties of a biopolymer.

Thus, the expertise of a competent laboratory in chitosan analysis is necessary to determine all these properties.
