# Laboratory analysis of vinylbenzene

## You wish to carry out the analysis of vinylbenzene in laboratory

First, vinylbenzene is an organic hydrocarbon used to make [rubber](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/polymer-materials-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-analysis-elastomer-rubber.md) and plastic components. Also known as styrene, vinylbenzene is a colorless liquid that evaporates quickly when exposed to air. If its molecules link together to form long styrene chains, it becomes polystyrene, an aromatic polymer with [thermoplastic](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/polymer-materials-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-analysis-thermoplastic-polymers.md) properties.

As a result, vinylbenzene is used to make all kinds of products. This ranges from shoes to the rubber backing of carpets. However, it is also used to make parts for cars and boats, plumbing pipes, fiberglass, insulation, some building materials and electrical components. It is also used in the manufacture of plastic cups and food storage containers.

Some health risks have been noted. Indeed, the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers vinylbenzene a suspected carcinogen. Exposure to this substance can occur through inhalation of automobile exhaust, cigarette smoke, and by being around building materials containing vinylbenzene.

Therefore, whether in the production of a vinylbenzene product or in a vinylbenzene exposure study, the support of a laboratory competent in vinylbenzene analysis is essential.
