## Fractographic analysis as an answer to understanding the failure of your polymer

### Why perform a fractographic analysis on polymer?

First of all, what is called fractography is the study of [fracture surfaces](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-sem-scanning-electron-microscopy/fracture-facies-analysis-laboratory/). It allows us to determine the relationship between the microstructure of the material and its mechanism of initiation and propagation of rupture, with the aim of identifying the cause of the rupture.

These fractographic analysis examinations are carried out, among others, by [Scanning Electron Microscopy](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-sem-scanning-electron-microscopy.md) coupled with an EDX microprobe. They can be supplemented by optical microscopy observations, hardness measurements, mechanical tests (traction, resilience, etc.) in order to refine the diagnosis and increase the relevance of the conclusions on the rupture phenomenon.

A polymer rupture is its separation into two or more pieces under the action of a stress.

These failures occur when the stresses that the polymers withstand exceed the breaking strength of the materials of which they are composed. It is therefore important to know as much as possible about this property, which depends on various factors such as temperature, deformation rate, environment of use, etc.
