Surface functionalization is used on several types of materials: polymers, metals, glasses, ceramics…

Surface functionalization can be achieved through different means including **nanostructuring** which uses **nanomaterials**.

### Why perform a surface functionalization characterization on nanomaterials

Characterizing the functionalization of a surface through the study of its nanostructure allows to better **understand and predict the new functionalities** that are conferred to it by the presence of nanomaterials.
