# Laboratory texture analysis

### What is texture analysis?

**Texture analysis (texturometry)**involves characterising the mechanical and tactile properties of a semi-solid substance or a material for which humans perceive particular tactile properties. Texture analysis is generally used in the [chemical](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/chemical-analysis-laboratory.md), [cosmetics](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analysis-cosmetics.md) and [pharmaceutical](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/analysis-industry-pharmaceuticals.md)[industries](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/chemical-analysis-laboratory.md). Its aim is to measure and record the variations (force, deformation, time) in a material when a compressive or tensile force is applied to the product.

### What parameters are analysed?

Various parameters are analysed during texture analysis:

- [**Hardness**](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/mechanical-laboratory-test/hardness-analysis-and-measurement-laboratory.md): The resistance to compression, useful for evaluating products such as pharmaceutical tablets or solid cosmetics.
- [**Elasticity**](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/polymer-materials-analysis-laboratory/plastics-processing-polymers/laboratory-measurement-of-elasticity-on-polymers.md): The ability of a material to regain its shape after being deformed. This is a key parameter for gels and creams.
- **Adhesivity**: A measure of the force required to lift a probe from a sample, used in products such as adhesives or viscous creams.
- **Cohesion**: The internal resistance of a material to being broken or fragmented, used for friable or brittle materials.
- [**Rupture**](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-expertise-services/laboratory-analysis-failures/laboratory-analysis-ruptures.md): The tendency of a material to break when subjected to increasing force, as in tablets.
