### What is a patent?

A patent is an industrial property right that protects an invention. It grants its holder an exclusive right to use the invention, generally for a period of 20 years, in a given territory (France, Europe, international…).

In concrete terms, registering a patent enables you to :

**Prevent a competitor from using, reproducing or selling** your invention without your authorization,

**Strengthen your competitive position** and your image as an innovative company,

**Promote your know-how** by proving its novelty and usefulness,

**Monetize your invention** through licensing or assignment.

### Why file a patent?

Firstly, the advantage of **registering a patent** is that you are the only one who can use this invention for a maximum **period of 20 years**.
