### What is the principle of HRMS analysis?

High-resolution mass spectrometers (HRMS), with analyzers capable of accessing **exact mass** such as the [time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF)](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/laboratory-analysis-tof-sims.md) or [Orbitrap](https://filab.fr/en/our-technical-resources/lc-orbitrap-analysis.md), are used to quantify organic contaminants. The performance of analyzers is compared by their resolution power, defined as the ability to produce signals that can be distinguished for two peaks with close masses.

The ability to **distinguish ions with different elemental composition and very similar molecular masses** is therefore determined by the resolution power. Consequently, **high resolution powers** are necessary to distinguish very close mass peaks. A mass spectrometer is considered **high-resolution** if its resolution power RP > 10,000 (FWHM at m/z 200).

Thus, HRMS makes it possible to **measure molecular masses or monoisotopic masses accurately**.
