### What is a GPC analysis?

[**Gel Permeation Chromatography**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gel_permeation_chromatography) (GPC), also known as Steric Exclusion Chromatography (SEC), is a characterisation technique for **determining average molecular weights and molar mass distributions**. This technique is used to separate molecules according to their size and molecular shape. The dissolved sample is injected via a mobile phase (or eluent) through a column with a controlled porosity packing (known as the stationary phase). By using this form of size exclusion chromatography and combining a series of detectors (RI and UV concentration, RALS/LALS light scattering, viscometer), the GPC/SEC technique can accurately determine molecular mass and size as well as intrinsic viscosity and structure, particularly of polymers.

### What is hot GPC?

Hot GPC, or High Temperature Gel Permeation Chromatography, is a chromatography method used to analyse thermally stable polymers. It is particularly suitable for analysing polymers that are not soluble at room temperature, such as certain plastics (polyesters, polyethylenes), resins or rubbers.
