# MIL-S-22499 Testing

## Do you need to validate the compliance of your laminated shims according to MIL-S-22499?

### Securing structural adjustments with MIL-S-22499 requirement

In the [Aerospace](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analysis-aeronautics-aerospace.md), [Space](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analysis-aeronautics-aerospace.md), and [Defense](https://filab.fr/en/sectors-of-activity/laboratory-analyses-tests-defense-security-sector.md) (ASD) sectors, assembly precision is a safety imperative. Laminated shims allow for perfect dimensional adjustment during structural assembly. Poor adhesive quality or a [non-compliant metal](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/control-of-alloys-and-grades-in-the-laboratory.md) grade can compromise the integrity of your **essential parts.**

The **MIL-S-22499** military specification defines requirements for laminated metallic sheets (shim stock) that can be peeled to the desired thickness. It imposes strict criteria on sheet [chemical composition](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/metallic-alloy-analysis-laboratory.md) ([Aluminum](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-analysis-aluminum-alloys.md), [Steel](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-of-analysis-and-expertise-of-steels.md), [Titanium)](https://filab.fr/en/our-services/our-analysis-services/metallurgical-analysis-laboratory/laboratory-analysis-titanium-alloys.md), adhesive bond quality, and ease of peeling without layer deformation.

At **FILAB**, we support manufacturers in the ASD supply chain with the control and qualification of their materials according to MIL-S-22499, with a clear goal: to ensure the reliability of your technical and industrial decisions.

### The MIL-S-22499 requirement: a precision and adhesion challenge

### Compliance control of laminated shims according to MIL-S-22499

Compliance with this requirement guarantees that the shims will fulfill their compensation function without oxidizing or delaminating unexpectedly. FILAB intervenes to validate the performance of these complex stacks.

It is specifically used to:

- **Verify the metallic grade** of the sheets (e.g., Aluminum 1100, Stainless Steel 302/304) by ICP-OES chemical analysis.
- **Evaluate adhesive quality** and its resistance to aging or aerospace fluids.
- **Measure precise thickness** of each foil and stacking regularity.

In the Aerospace and Defense industries, compliance with MIL-S-22499 has a direct impact on:

- **Assembly precision** of mechanical assemblies and control surfaces.
- **Resistance to galvanic corrosion** between layers.
- **In-service behavior** of **strategic components** subjected to constant vibration.

## Our FAQ

Which metals are commonly used under the MIL-S-22499 requirement?
The most frequent alloys are **Aluminum (Type 1100)**, **Stainless Steel (Type 302 or 304)**, **Brass**, and sometimes **Titanium** for space applications.

How is peeling tested in the laboratory?
Beyond the manual peel test, we observe the surface state after peeling under a microscope to verify that no **excessive adhesive residues** remain, which could distort the final thickness during assembly.

 Is MIL-S-22499 still current?
It remains a major reference in the **Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM)** of many military and civil aircraft, even if it is sometimes supplemented by more recent manufacturer specifications (or AMS-DTL-22499).

What is the influence of temperature on these shims?
The adhesive must remain stable. Exposure to high temperatures must not make the sheets impossible to peel. FILAB can simulate this **thermal aging** before testing.
