First of all, an organotin is an organic compound with at least one covalent bond between a carbon atom and a tin atom. It is a member of the organometallic family of compounds.
Like most organometallic compounds, organotins in the environment are often toxic and ecotoxic. Chemists have identified more than 260 so-called organotin compounds and 36 of them are toxic and ecotoxic. In addition, they have a long life span in the environment.
However, organotins are used as chemical stabilizers of some plastics (first stabilizer of polyvinyl chloride, PVC), stabilizing additives of synthetic lubricants for aviation, liquid precursors for chemical vapor deposition, stabilizers of organic polymers, reaction catalysts, biocides mainly used in pesticides, antifouling marine paints.
Due to their high toxicity, organotins are subject to drastic regulations and therefore it is necessary to analyze them in detail before any use.
