Determination of PFOA in the laboratory

What is PFOA?

PFOA, better known as perfluorooctanoic acid, is a perfluorinated carboxylic acid and synthetic fluorosurfactant. It is known for its stability and persistence in the environment.

At the industrial level, it can be used in fluoropolymers, in particular used for the synthesis of PTFE, fire-fighting foam or for non-stick coatings (especially in the food industry for kitchen utensils).

PFOA is identified as a “substance of very high concern” because it is classified as “PBT”, Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic substance. PFOA emissions must therefore be minimized.
