Examination by metallographic section in a laboratory

Your needs: to examine your materials by metallographic section

First of all, metallographic analysis is the study of the components and physical structure of metal alloys by using microscopy.

Metallographic tests can also be defined as the observation and reveal of macro and micro scale visual characteristics of a material. Materials being highly sensitive to the microstructure, metallographic tests enables an expert to observe the atomic structure and spatial distribution of the grains, constituents, inclusions or phases in metallic alloys.

Furthermore, this method also makes possible to understand the potential sources of failures such as cracks and material discontinuities.

The surface of a metallographic specimen is prepared by several methods of grinding, polishing and etching. Then, the material is analyzed with the adequate techniques.

Many techniques are used in metallographic analysis but the most used are:

  • Optical microscope to characterize the nature of the grains, constituents and inclusions

  • Scanning electron microscope (SEM or MEB) coupled with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS)
