Laboratory analysis of cosmetic packaging

Cosmetics industrialists are confronted with important issues regarding the compliance of their packaging when a new product is launched.

Safety challenges for cosmetic packaging

According to the EC Regulation 1223/2009 on cosmetics, “before releasing a cosmetic product on the market, the cosmetic product must be safe for human health during its intended use or what would be considered reasonably foreseeable conditions of its use.”(article 3).

After a cosmetic product is produced, the solution has to be packaged. And it is at this stage that it is still possible for the contents to become contaminated by the container due to unwanted interactions. It is therefore essential to verify that packaging does not contain any leachable substances prohibited by regulations.

Industrialists are required to ensure the safety and quality of their cosmetic packaging to avoid the risks of migration, oxidation or the apparition of defects in their products. Support from an analytical laboratory can provide viable results to assess the compliance and performance of cosmetic packaging, according to the criteria specified by a scope statement or by regulatory standards.
