A rupture of a polymer is its separation into two or more parts under the action of a stress.

These ruptures occur when the solicitations that the polymers support exceed the resistance to rupture of the materials of which it is made. It is therefore important to know as much as possible about this last property which depends on various factors such as temperature, deformation speed, environment of use, etc…

Each fracture (or crack) also has a specific surface that allows us to identify the cause and origin of the fracture: this is fractography, which is the art of analyzing the fracture surface of broken parts.

Its purpose is to know the mechanism of rupture of the material (ductile, fragile, intergranular, fatigue, …) and to understand how and why the polymer broke. For this, a macroscopic observation (morphological analysis) and a microscopic observation (microfractographic analysis) of the fracture surface are carried out.
