Formic acid, also called methanoic acid, is an organic acid found in the glands of many insects such as bees and ants. It is also found on the hairs that make up the leaves of certain urticaceous plants.

Formic acid is used in the textile and leather industries. It is also used in the formulation of insecticides, lacquers, solvents and household products. In a diluted state, it is used as an additive in the food industry as a preservative (E236). In the pharmaceutical industry, formic acid is used as an antimicrobial preservative.
