Determination of the mineral load of a polymer in the laboratory

Your needs: determine the mineral load of your polymer materials

What is a mineral charge?

A mineral filler of a polymer is a solid material of mineral origin dispersed in the polymer studied. Generally introduced in powder form, the mineral filler plays several roles. Indeed, it allows to reduce the cost of a material or to modify its characteristics.

The most commonly used mineral fillers are :

  • quartz
  • mica
  • talc
  • chalk

In addition, mineral fillers are used in many polymeric materials such as paints and plastics.

Why determine the mineral content of your polymer materials?

As previously stated, mineral filler is, among other things, added to a polymer in order to modify its characteristics. Moreover, depending on the field of application of your products, the mineral filler content is different to meet your needs.

Indeed, for a paint for example, a too low or too high mineral content, directly impacts the visual (more or less smooth).

Thus, the analysis of the mineral content of your polymers by a specialized laboratory is an important step in the development and optimization of your products.

FILAB assists you in determining the mineral load of your polymer materials.

For more than 30 years, our laboratory FILAB has had the experience and the specific analytical equipment to assist industrialists in solving their problems related to mineral filler in polymers by providing its customers with the know-how and experience of its team.

Examples of services

Thermogravimetric analysis ATG, ATG-FTIR and ATG-MS to determine the decomposition temperature of the product, as well as its percentage of mineral fillers

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDX) allows morphological observations and local semi-quantitative chemical analysis of the product fillers

X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to determine the nature of the crystalline phase(s) constituting the product's fillers.

ICP-AES optical emission spectrometry to determine the chemical composition of mineral fillers
