The implantation of a prosthesis in a bone site generates a cascade of tissue/implant reactions that ultimately leads to the “osseointegration” of the implant. In order to promote the “biointegration” of the implants in the bone tissue, several studies have shown the interest of covering the implant with hydroxyapatite type coatings or with polymers having ionic functions similar to those of natural molecules. Titanium and titanium alloys are widely used in the field of orthopaedic and dental implants for their corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. The physico-chemical characteristics of the surface influence the adsorption of proteins and thus the adhesion and proliferation of cells. To improve osseointegration, several approaches have been examined: physically modifying the surface by applying an inorganic layer of the hydroxyapatite type and functionalizing the surface with polymers carrying ionic groups of the sulfonate or carboxylate type. Perfect control of the purity of raw materials is essential for grafting polymers or depositing PAH powders on the surface of implants. FILAB has high-level analytical skills and resources that have enabled it to develop and implement tools and methods adapted to surface characterization, chemical analysis and characterization of the crystallinity and phase purity of hydroxyapatite powders in accordance with the NF ISO 13779-3 standard, and to verify the purity of the polymers by means of adapted characterization tools: SEM EDX, NMR, ICP and XRD.
