You want to measure the viscoelasticity of your product

What is viscoelasticity?

Viscoelasticity is a property of materials that exhibit both viscous (flowing) and elastic (reversible deformation) behaviour when subjected to stress. A viscoelastic material deforms like a fluid under the effect of prolonged stress (viscous behaviour), but can also return to its initial shape when released from this stress (elastic behaviour).

In the field of cosmetics, and more particularly wrinkle-filling products (such as hyaluronic acid injections), viscoelasticity is an essential property to guarantee both the effectiveness and durability of the treatment.

What are viscoelastic materials?

Viscoelastic materials are commonly found in polymers, rubbers, gels and certain biological tissues. Viscoelasticity is therefore a crucial parameter to take into account in fields such as materials engineering, biomechanics and the design of products such as adhesives, cosmetics and protective materials (shock absorbers, foams).

Viscoelasticity and wrinkle fillers

In the field of cosmetics, and more particularly wrinkle-filling products (such as hyaluronic acid injections), viscoelasticity is an essential property to guarantee both the effectiveness and the durability of the treatment.

Why is viscoelasticity important for wrinkle fillers?

Elasticity to maintain volume: the elasticity of filling products allows the injected material to regain its shape and maintain a lasting volumising effect. After injection, the product must be able to withstand pressure and facial movements (facial expressions, chewing, etc.) while retaining its ability to fill wrinkles.
Viscosity for controlled application: the viscous component ensures easy application and controlled spreading of the product in the skin. The product should not migrate or disperse too quickly after injection, allowing precise placement and good distribution under the skin.
Resistance to facial movements: the face is constantly in motion. A viscoelastic wrinkle-filler can adapt to movement without losing effectiveness or becoming irreversibly deformed. It cushions movements while maintaining the structure under the skin, offering a natural, long-lasting result.
Treatment durability: filling products with optimised viscoelastic properties tend to break down more slowly in the body, prolonging the effect of the anti-wrinkle treatment. The combination of fluidity (viscosity) and suppleness (elasticity) helps to maintain results for several months.

Our technical resources for measuring viscoelasticity

Dynamic mechanical analysers and rheometers are the main tools used to measure the viscoelasticity of polymers. These techniques ensure that polymers meet the quality and performance standards required for their specific applications:

Dynamic Mechanical Analysers (DMA) are used to characterise the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of materials as a function of temperature, frequency and amplitude of deformation.
Rheometers that measure shear strength (shear rate), providing detailed information on viscoelastic properties.
