What is a technical ceramic?

Technical ceramics are a branch of the large family of ceramics that deal with industrial applications as opposed to craft creations (pottery, …), artistic (art ceramics) or porcelain. Benefiting from a very large diversity of materials, technical ceramics are used today in many sectors of activity: aeronautics, space, medical, electronics, defense, energy, transport, luxury, …

Why analyze a technical ceramic?

To meet the most complex industrial challenges, technical ceramics have unique properties that enable them to meet a wide range of needs: mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, optical, biocompatibility and aesthetic.

Due to their exceptional performance, technical ceramics provide solutions where conventional materials are not effective. As they are increasingly the only solution available to meet technical challenges, technical ceramics must be specifically controlled in order to guarantee their high level characteristics. The understanding of failure mechanisms is also a major challenge for the development and the guarantee of performance in order to enable advanced ceramics to offer durable and reliable solutions.

Our laboratory services

For more than 30 years, our FILAB laboratory has had the experience and specific analytical equipment to assist companies in the analysis and failure expertise of technical ceramics, through tailor-made support.

From analysis to R&D, the FILAB laboratory offers a multisectoral expertise for several types of requests related to technical ceramics

  • Quantitative analysis of the elemental chemical composition of ceramics
  • Crystallographic characterization to identify crystalline phases on ceramics
  • Determination of the physical properties (granulometry, density, specific surface, porosity, …) of ceramics
  • Study of thermal properties (dilatation, thermogravimetry, calorimetry, heat capacity, …) of ceramics
  • Morphological and microstructural expertise and study of failure by Field Effect Scanning Electron Microscopy (FEG-SEM) coupled with an EDX microprobe.

For this type of service, the FILAB laboratory uses state-of-the-art analysis techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with an EDX microprobe (SEM FEG-EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) completed by physical characterization techniques (laser granulometry, BET, porosimetry, pycnometry), thermal (ATG, ATG-IRTF, DSC, dilatometry) or chemical analysis (ICP-AES, ICP-MS, CHONS).
