As an industrialist, you wish to carry out analysis of nanomaterials on your food

The presence of nanomaterials in our food is undeniable. They are regularly used to improve the appearance, packaging or nutritional content of food products. However, their potential impact on human health raises many questions today. For this reason, EFSA and ANSES have published guidelines to assess the health risks associated with the use of nanomaterials in food. FILAB performs the analysis of nanomaterials in foods and freeze-dried food powders.

FILAB laboratory is able to support you in the technical requirements recommended by EFSA and ANSES regarding the presence of nanoparticles in foods.

FILAB laboratory assists food manufacturers in the analysis of nanomaterials in foods according to EFSA and Anses requirements

FILAB assists food manufacturers in meeting the requirements of the EFSA Guidance on Nanomaterials.

To define the presence of nanoscale particles in novel foods, food additives and food contact materials, our laboratory provides the necessary scientific evidence for your registration dossiers.

Characterization of food additives and novel foods

Our EFSA nanomaterials expertise covers the identification of engineered nanomaterials in complex food matrices.

We help you determine if a substance falls under the "engineered nanomaterial" definition as per EU regulations, providing data on:

  • Particle size distribution to identify the 50% threshold.
  • Morphological characterization (spherical, rod-shaped, or fibrous).
  • Chemical composition and surface chemistry.

Compliance with EFSA and ANSES technical requirements

FILAB supports you in fulfilling the technical requirements recommended by EFSA and ANSES regarding the presence of nanoparticles in foods. Our reports are designed to be integrated directly into safety assessment dossiers, ensuring that your products meet the highest transparency and safety standards for the European market.

Our FAQ

How to get a quote from FILAB?

To obtain a quote, you can contact our team via our contact form, by phone, or by email.

Simply tell us your requirements (type of material, desired analysis, applicable standards, urgency, quantity of samples, etc.). We will then send you a personalized technical and pricing proposal within 24-48 hours.

What is the typical duration of the analysis?

Turnaround times vary depending on the nature of the analysis and the complexity of the expert assessment project.

However, FILAB is committed to providing fast turnaround times tailored to your industrial constraints and urgent needs.

What is the EFSA definition of a nanomaterial in food?

EFSA follows the EU recommendation where a nanomaterial is a natural, incidental, or manufactured material containing particles in an unbound state or as an aggregate/agglomerate, where 50% or more of the particles have one or more external dimensions in the size range 1 nm – 100 nm.

Why is SEM the preferred technique for EFSA nanomaterials expertise?

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) allows for the direct observation of particle morphology and size. When coupled with EDX, it identifies the chemical nature of each particle, which is a mandatory requirement for EFSA characterization dossiers.
