ASTM E1019 Testing
Do you need to perform analysis of steel, iron, nickel, or cobalt according to ASTM E1019?
Securing metallic materials for the ASD sector with ASTM E1019
In the Aerospace, Space, and Defense (ASD) sectors, mastering interstitial elements is a safety imperative. Even the slightest variation in Carbon, Sulfur, Nitrogen, or Oxygen content can alter mechanical performance and fatigue strength in your essential parts.
ASTM E1019 is the benchmark standard for the determination of Carbon, Sulfur, Nitrogen, and Oxygen in Steel, Iron, Nickel, and Cobalt alloys. It defines combustion and inert gas fusion protocols that allow for extreme precision, even at ppm (parts per million) levels.
At FILAB, we support manufacturers in the ASD supply chain with the characterization and control of their materials according to ASTM E1019. Our goal is clear: to ensure the reliability of your technical and industrial decisions.
ASTM E1019: A key challenge for metallic alloy integrity
Elemental analysis by combustion and fusion according to ASTM E1019
The ASTM E1019 standard defines test methods for the quantitative chemical analysis of gases and light elements in metals. Although present in very small quantities, these elements often dictate the metallurgical behavior of the alloy.
It is specifically used to:
- Precisely measure Carbon and Sulfur content by Infrared (IR) Combustion.
- Determine Nitrogen and Oxygen content by Inert Gas Fusion.
- Validate compliance of raw materials and finished parts after heat treatment or Additive Manufacturing.
In the Aerospace and Defense industries, mastering these elements according to ASTM E1019 has a direct impact on:
- Ductility and Toughness of high-strength steels.
- Weld quality (absence of porosity or cracking).
- In-service behavior of strategic components subjected to high thermomechanical stress.

FAQ
It covers a wide range of ferrous alloys (steels, cast irons) as well as Nickel alloys (Inconel, Hastelloy) and Cobalt alloys. For reactive metals like Titanium, standards such as ASTM E1409 or E1941 are preferred.
The combustion analyzer allows for the extraction of both elements in a single operation. Sulfur is particularly monitored because it can cause "hot shortness" (brittleness at high temperatures) if not perfectly controlled.
Generally, a few grams of material (in the form of chips or small solid pieces) are sufficient to perform replicates and guarantee the representativeness of the result.
ASTM E1019 is a reference method using total combustion or fusion of the sample. It offers significantly higher precision for Carbon, Sulfur, and Oxygen compared to Optical Emission Spectrometry, especially at very low content levels.
