Laboratory Analysis and determination of BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene) contents

Your needs: to analyze and quantify the presence of BTEX compounds in your products

What de we mean by BTEX ?

BTEX is an abbreviation standing for Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene which are all toxic volatile organic compounds. Exposure to BTEX compounds can have adverse effects on a person’s health (neurobiological, respiratory and genetic lesions) and on the environment. More specifically, Benzene has been classified as a carcinogen.

Why realize the determination of BTEX compounds ?

Despite their toxicity, BTEX compounds are still largely present in petroleum-based products and used on certain industrial production sites as either solvents or as reagents.

The regulations surrounding the level and duration of exposure to BTEX compounds are becoming  more and more stringent, forcing industrialists to inspect the quality of their solvents and their reagents, and regional authorities to determine the BTEX content in water and soil samples.

Our solution: to provide quick and reliable BTEX analysis

Our services

Equipped with a modern and diverse analytical fleet, FILAB laboratory can provide tailored assistance with the inspection and analysis of BTEX compounds :

– BTEX chemical analysis (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene)

– Determination of BTEX solvents

– Soil and water analyse for detecting the presence of BTEX compounds

Implementation of periodic inspections

Development and validation of analytical procedures

Even though BTEX analysis can vary based on the properties of the sample, the techniques we use often stay the same :

Gas Chromatography coupled to a Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS)

Headspace analysis of volatile compounds

A BTEX analyzer is a powerful equipment for qualifying and quantifying in real time the concentration of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene in air, water and soil. The sample taken is concentrated in an absorbent trap, then analyzed by our technicians using a gas chromatography process. A BTEX analyzer enables optimum monitoring of BTEX concentration variations.

The lifetime of BTEX depends on the environment, climate and the concentration of other pollutants. As a result, the concentration in the atmosphere varies from a few hours to a few days. That's why it's useful to measure BTEX regularly or even continuously, using a BTEX analyzer.

BTEX result from a variety of sources related to human activity, both industrial and domestic. BTEX analysis enables us to comply with the regulations of environmental protection agencies, and to help ensure the safety of all.

Some industries are more concerned by BTEX analysis because of their high emissions:

  • the petrochemical industry
  • the cosmetics industry
  • the pharmaco-chemical industry
  • automotive-related industries (petrol stations and garages).

Some industrial processes are more concerned by BTEX analysis, due to the emissions generated by the production of products (plastics, synthetic fibers, solvents, glues, paints, detergents and many household products...).

Outdoors and in ambient air, the concentration of BTEX is influenced by gasoline-powered vehicles, as well as the storage and distribution of petroleum products. Indoors, the domestic use of solvents is more responsible for BTEX emissions, particularly paints, thinners, glues, varnishes and pesticides.
