What is furfural?
Furfural (CAS n°98-01-1) is an organic compound belonging to the family of heterocyclic aldehydes, with the chemical formula C₅H₄O₂. It comes in the form of a colourless or slightly yellow oily liquid and has an almond-like odour. It is moderately soluble in water and miscible with most organic solvents.
Furfural is mainly obtained by hydrolysis of lignocellulosic raw materials. These materials include cereal hulls such as rice bran and wheat bran, maize cobs and walnut hulls.
Which industrial sectors use glutaraldehyde?
Furfural has many industrial uses. It is used as a solvent in the purification of lubricating oils and as a selective solvent for special extractions. In the field of composite materials, furfural is used in the manufacture of furan resins, which are essential for the production of composite materials and rigid foams. As a chemical intermediate, it is the basis for the production of products such as furfuryl alcohol, phenolic resins and various plastics. Finally, in the agro-industry, furfural is used to formulate pesticides and other agricultural products.
