First, ISO 11890-1 is one of a series of standards that deal with sampling and testing of paints, varnishes and related products.
It specifies a method for determining the volatile organic compound (VOC) content of paints, varnishes and their raw materials. It can be used when the expected content of volatile organic compounds is higher than 15 % by mass. If the expected content of volatile organic compounds is greater than 0.1 % by mass and less than 15 % by mass, ISO 11890-2 applies. The ISO 11890-2 method applies when the system contains both VOCs and SVOCs, because the result obtained according to ISO 11890-1 can be influenced by the SVOCs.
In addition, the methods from ISO 11890-1 and ISO 11890-2 assume that the volatile material is water or organic material.
Thus, to perform this type of analysis, the support of a laboratory competent in the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC) is essential.
