Firstly, the aim of profilometry is to measure the relief of a surface in order to obtain a range of information about the surface under study.
Why perform a profilometry analysis?
By measuring the relief of a surface, profilometry can provide information on the surface condition of a material, its roughness, the study of a surface defect, the identification of phases and the structural analysis of the surface. Profilometry can therefore be used to identify and solve problems of non-conformity, abnormal wear (by abrasion, corrosion or adhesion) or failure.
Profiling is therefore a key step in the characterisation and analysis of a surface.
