Measurement of specific surface area (BET) according to ISO 9277 at the FILAB laboratory

At the FILAB laboratory, our teams support manufacturers in:

  • characterizing specific surface area and porosity to guide the development of new materials and formulations;
  • comparing batches and qualifying suppliers;
  • controlling the specific surface area and porosity of raw materials and finished products;
  • interpreting the results.

Why perform a specific surface area measurement?

The determination of specific surface area is used in many industrial contexts:
Quality control

To verify the conformity of a raw material or a finished product.

Materials development

Compare different formulations or manufacturing processes.

Process optimization

Understanding the impact of grinding, calcination or heat treatment on the structure of the material.

Failure investigation

Identify a surface variation that could explain a loss of performance (reactivity, adsorption, filtration…).

Principle of the BET method

The BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) method is based on measuring the adsorption of a gas onto the surface of a solid material.

The principle is as follows:

  • The sample is first degassed to remove adsorbed molecules.
  • A gas (usually nitrogen) is introduced at a controlled temperature.
  • The volume of gas adsorbed onto the surface of the material is measured.
  • The adsorption data allows the specific surface area to be calculated using the BET model.

This approach makes it possible to determine the total surface area accessible to gas molecules, expressed in: m²/g (square meters per gram)

ISO 9277 defines the experimental conditions and the criteria for validating the calculation.

Why choose a laboratory accredited for ISO 9277?

FILAB Laboratory performs specific surface analysis and measurement using BET according to ISO 9277.

With significant experience in implementing BET methods, FILAB Laboratory supports you in the surface characterization of your materials.

Our ISO 17025 accreditations

our ISO 17025 Accreditations

The FILAB laboratory is accredited ISO 17025 by COFRAC for :

measurement of specific surface area using the BET method (in accordance with ISO 9277) and particle size analysis using laser technology (in accordance with ISO 13320 for liquid and dry processes),

density measurement by Helium pycnometry (in accordance with ASTM B923 and ISO 12154),

determination of the grain size (in accordance with ASTM E112 and NF EN ISO 643) for solid bodies.

Our FAQ

What materials can be analyzed?

The BET measurement applies to a wide range of industrial materials:

  • mineral powders
  • catalysts
  • activated carbons
  • silicas
  • metal oxides
  • pigments
  • nanomaterials
  • porous materials
  • pharmaceuticals

Depending on the nature of the material, the preparation and measurement conditions are adapted to obtain reliable results.

What is the specific surface area of a material?

Specific surface area is the total surface area of a material relative to its mass.

It is generally expressed in m²/g (square meters per gram).

This parameter is particularly important for powdered or porous materials, as it directly influences their physical and chemical properties, such as:

  • chemical reactivity
  • adsorption phenomena
  • catalytic activity
  • dissolution
  • interaction with other materials

The higher the specific surface area, the more surface area the material has available to interact with its environment.

What is the BET method?

The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method is a characterization technique that determines the specific surface area of a solid based on the adsorption of a gas onto its surface.

During the analysis:

  • the sample is degassed to remove adsorbed molecules,
  • a gas (often nitrogen) is introduced at a low temperature,
  • the volume of adsorbed gas is measured,
  • a mathematical model is used to calculate the specific surface area.

This method is widely used for the analysis of powders, porous materials, and nanomaterials.

Why use a BET analysis laboratory accredited according to ISO 9277?

BET analysis according to ISO 9277 allows for the quantification of specific surface area, a key parameter of surface condition. It complements other techniques such as microscopy by providing a precise measurement of the accessible surface area, useful for evaluating the adhesion, reactivity, or porosity of materials.
