What is an endocrine disruptor?
According to the official WHO definition, an endocrine disruptor is “an exogenous substance or mixture that alters the functions of the endocrine system and thus induces adverse health effects in an intact organism, its progeny or (sub)populations”.
Natural or synthetic, the origins of endocrine disruptors are multiple. They can come from synthetic hormones (contraception), pesticides, biocides, plasticizers, drugs, etc…
Endocrine disruptors can have different consequences on the body (see the ANSES report):
- Mimic the action of a natural hormone and thus cause the response due to a hormone,
- Prevent a hormone from binding and transmitting its signal,
- Disrupt the production or regulation of hormones or their receptors.
In other words, endocrine disruptors can lead to fertility problems, cancer, diabetes or autism.
Why analyze endocrine disruptors?
Today, many substances are suspected to be dangerous including bisphenol A, phthalates or brominated compounds.
In July 2017, a bill was adopted by the European Commission to establish a regulatory structure around endocrine disruptors. Thus, the evaluation of substances suspected of containing endocrine disruptors becomes mandatory.
