You want to analyze your products to quantify their fluoride content?

What are fluorides?

Fluorine is the first chemical element belonging to the halogen family and the most reactive atom in the periodic table of elements.

The fluoride ion, noted F-, is a fluorine atom that has gained an electron.  The term “fluorides” refers to compounds, organic or inorganic, which contain fluorine.

Fluorine is not present in its elemental state in nature, but rather in the form of fluorides which can be found everywhere: in the soil, air and water and consequently in plants and animals.

Why analyze fluoride in the laboratory?

Fluorides are widely used in industry. They are particularly used in the production of aluminum and specialty chemicals used in refrigeration and air conditioning using fluorocarbons.

Fluoride is also commonly added to tap water, particularly in North America, and used in dental products to prevent cavities. Thus, it can be found in toothpastes, mouthwashes, dental floss…

Although it is used in the food industry, fluoride (and / or fluorine) is however recognized as a toxic substance for humans. Indeed, fluorides are cumulative and persistent. They can cause acute poisoning depending on the chronic intake of fluoride (contaminated water, drugs containing fluorine, tea or toothpaste).

In addition, as a corrosion precursor, industrialists may have to control the presence and quantity of fluorine in materials (alloys, polymers…) or formulations. In addition, all PMUC (Products and Materials Used in Power Plant) must be carefully controlled.

Customized support in fluoride analysis at FILAB laboratory

The FILAB laboratory offers its expertise in Ion Chromatography analysis, with preparation methods adapted to each type of matrix, for tailor-made support in fluoride analysis.

The PMUC controls performed by FILAB comply with the EDF D5713 / DJX / RB 90 0295 procedure.

FILAB laboratory intervenes for example in the following services:

Our services

Determination of halogens (sulfides, bromides, chlorides, fluorides)

Determination of fluorine by ion chromatography

PMUC approval and control: fluorine and fluoride determination in products intended for use in nuclear power plants

Development and validation of a method for the determination of fluoride by CLI
