You wish to test the density of metallic powders

Why characterize the density of metallic powders?

First of all, the density of a metal powder is relative to different parameters depending on whether it is packed or not, as what is determined is the density of the metal powder studied.

In fact, following the recommendations of the Ma-0015 standard, the different types of density that can be determined are

  • The bulk density, determined by the funnel method, in accordance with ISO 3923-1 or ASTM B212
  • Density after compaction, determined according to ISO 3953 or ASTM B527.
  • True density, determined by helium pycnometry, in accordance with ISO 12154 or
    ASTM B923

The support of a laboratory competent in the determination of these parameters is therefore essential in the characterization of the density of metal powders.

FILAB helps you test the density of your metallic powders

Through our three levels of services: analysis, expertise and R&D support, FILAB assists companies from all sectors in density testing of metal powders. FILAB provides its clients with the know-how and experience of its team, as well as a 5200m² analytical park equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.

Instruments for the analysis of metal powders :

  • GranuHeap: measurement of the static properties of a metal powder (angle of repose, static cohesion index).

  • GranuDrum: measurement of flow properties (flow angle, dynamic cohesion index, angle of first avalanche, powder aeration).

  • GranuPack: measurement of the dynamic compaction of a metal powder (apparent density, tap density, Hausner ratio, densification dynamics).

  • GranuFlow: measurement of flow through orifices, a key indicator of powder flowability.

  • GranuCharge: measurement of the electrostatic properties of metal powders.

The FILAB laboratory is accredited ISO 17025 by the COFRAC for:

  • specific surface measurement using the BET method (in accordance with ISO 9277) and laser particle size analysis (in accordance with ISO 13320 for liquid and dry analysis),
  • density measurement using Helium pycnometry (in accordance with ASTM B923 and ISO 12154),
  • grain size determination (in accordance with ASTM E112 and NF EN ISO 643) for solids.
