Your needs: determination of kinetics by ATG in accordance with ASTM E1641

What are kinetics ?

Kinetics is the study of the speeds of reactions or transformations, and the factors that influence these speeds. In materials science and chemistry, kinetics enables us to understand how and at what speed a system evolves towards a new state when it undergoes a change, such as an input of thermal energy.

What does ASTM E1641 say about the determination of kinetics by ATG?

ASTM E1641 is a standard method developed by ASTM International for determining the activation energy of a material from mass loss data obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

It aims to calculate the activation energy associated with thermal processes such as decomposition or evaporation of polymeric materials. This provides a better understanding of the thermal properties and stability of the polymer in specific environments.

Methodology for the determination of kinetics by ATG according to ASTM E1641

Thanks to several tests carried out at different temperature ramps, it is possible to extrapolate the results to estimate the kinetic parameters of the reaction. The activation energy for a given conversion rate is then measured.

The kinetic parameters can then be used to make predictions:

  • Conversion curves to estimate the evolution of the conversion rate as a function of time at specific temperatures.
  • Isoconversion curves to evaluate the time-temperature pairing required to achieve a given conversion rate.

Step 1 : Analysis of a sample using different ramps to determine the kinetic parameters

Step 2 : Using kinetic parameters to draw prediction curves

Applications of the ASTM E1641 standard

The predictive aspect of the ASTM E1641 standard makes it possible to optimise various processes and, consequently, to reduce losses (time savings, energy savings):

  • Design: estimation of the service life of a material under certain thermal conditions.
  • Storage: study of the thermal stability of raw materials or active substances.
  • Safety: identification of decomposition thresholds for sensitive materials.
