Do you need to validate the compliance of your titanium alloys according to MIL-T-9047 ?

Securing titanium supplies for the ASD sector with MIL-T-9047

In the Aerospace, Space, and Defense (ASD) sectors, titanium is the material of choice for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. However, its properties depend on absolute chemical purity and a perfectly controlled microstructure. Any deviation can compromise the reliability of your essential parts.

The MIL-T-9047 military specification defines requirements for titanium and titanium alloy bars and billets (notably Ti-6Al-4V). It imposes rigorous controls on chemical composition (including interstitial elements like hydrogen and oxygen) as well as microstructural characteristics.

At FILAB, we support manufacturers in the ASD supply chain with the control and qualification of their titanium alloys according to MIL-T-9047. Our goal is clear: to ensure the reliability of your technical and industrial decisions.

MIL-T-9047: a demanding standard for the defense sector

Titanium compliance control according to MIL-T-9047

The MIL-T-9047 specification requires exhaustive material validation. FILAB intervenes to ensure that each batch respects the strict tolerance limits imposed by military prime contractors.

It is specifically used to:

  • Verify alloying elements (Aluminum, Vanadium, Iron...) by ICP-OES.
  • Determine interstitial elements (H2, O2, N2, C) by inert gas fusion or combustion—determinant parameters for titanium ductility.
  • Perform metallographic analysis to validate the structure (alpha/beta) and verify the absence of transformation defects.

In the Aerospace and Defense industries, compliance with MIL-T-9047 has a direct impact on:

  • Fatigue resistance of engine and structural components.
  • Corrosion resistance and thermal stability.
  • Operational safety of strategic components used in defense systems.

Our FAQ

Which titanium grades are most tested under MIL-T-9047?

Although the standard covers several grades, Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) and Commercially Pure (CP) Titanium are the most frequently analyzed for defense applications.

Why is hydrogen analysis fundamental in this standard?

Titanium has a strong affinity for hydrogen. An excess of this element can cause Hydrogen Embrittlement (HIE), leading to brittle fracture under stress. MIL-T-9047 sets very low limits that FILAB measures by inert gas fusion.

What is the difference between MIL-T-9047 and AMS 4928?

AMS 4928 is a civil aerospace specification (SAE) very similar to MIL-T-9047. While MIL-T-9047 is traditionally oriented towards Defense, FILAB is capable of performing tests according to both standards.
