Characterization of nanomaterials in pearls in the laboratory

Your need: characterize nanomaterials in pearls

Why characterize nanomaterials in pearlescent materials

First of all, nanomaterials are regularly used in cosmetic products, either voluntarily to obtain specific properties, or involuntarily. For example, mother-of-pearl, regularly used in cosmetics for its satin appearance, can imply risks of presence of nanomaterials in cosmetic products.

A nanomaterial is defined by the European cosmetic regulation as “an insoluble or biopersistent material, intentionally manufactured and characterized by one or more external dimensions, or an internal structure, on a scale of 1 to 100 nanometers” (according to ISO 80004).

Thus, the cosmetic regulation stipulates that nanomaterials must be specifically labeled. Cosmetic products containing nanomaterials must therefore be notified to the Commission 6 months before being placed on the market.

Indeed, at the national level, the R-Nano declaration requires to trace and declare the use of nanomaterials with physicochemical characterizations.

Thus, the support of a competent laboratory in the characterization of nanomaterials in nacres is essential in order to respect the regulations in force.
