ASTM E1251 Testing
Do you need to perform analysis of aluminum or aluminum alloys according to ASTM E1251 ?
Securing metallic materials for the ASD sector with ASTM E1251
In the Aerospace, Space, and Defense (ASD) sectors, the lightweight properties and strength of aluminum alloys are key assets. Even the slightest variation in chemical composition (Magnesium, Copper, Silicon...) can alter the mechanical performance and corrosion resistance of your metallic parts.
ASTM E1251 is the reference standard for the analysis of Aluminum and its alloys by Spark Optical Emission Spectrometry (Spark-OES). It allows for a rapid and extremely precise verification of grade compliance (2000, 5000, 6000, 7000 series, etc.).
At FILAB, we support manufacturers in the ASD supply chain with the characterization and control of their materials according to ASTM E1251. Our goal is clear: to ensure the reliability of your technical and industrial decisions.
ASTM E1251: A key challenge for aluminum alloys
Aluminum analysis by spark-OES according to ASTM E1251
The ASTM E1251 standard defines a standardized test method for the quantitative chemical analysis of aluminum and its alloys. It is particularly suited for controlling purity and dosing the alloying elements that give aluminum its specific properties.
It is specifically used to:
- Precisely measure alloying elements (Si, Cu, Mg, Mn, Zn, Li...) and impurities (Fe, Ti...).
- Verify compliance of grades against international standards (EN, AA - Aluminum Association...).
- Control quality of supplies and the stability of foundry processes.
In the Aerospace and Defense industries, adhering to the tolerances of ASTM E1251 has a direct impact on:
- Strength-to-weight ratio of structures.
- Response to heat treatments (solution heat treatment and aging).
- Long-term reliability of strategic components exposed to fatigue and corrosion constraints.
ASTM E1251 is therefore essential for material qualification, quality control, supplier validation, or failure analysis following a non-conformity.

Our FAQ
It applies to pure aluminum and almost all its industrial alloys. The technique requires solid samples (billets, cast buttons, or finished parts) with a flat surface sufficient for sparking.
It allows for the determination of all standard aluminum elements: Silicon, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Magnesium, Chromium, Nickel, Zinc, Titanium, as well as more specific elements like Lithium or Boron.
ASTM E1251 relies on Optical Emission Spectrometry (Spark-OES). By creating a spark under an argon atmosphere, the atoms in the sample are excited and emit light radiation characteristic of their concentration.
The E1251 standard is designed for massive (bulk) samples. For powders (common in Additive Manufacturing), it is necessary to compact/pelletize the sample or use another method such as ICP-OES (ASTM E2353) following acid digestion.
