Do you need to validate the compliance of your aluminum forgings according to MIL-A-22771?

Securing the quality of forgings with MIL-A-22771 specification

In the Aerospace, Space, and Defense (ASD) sectors, forged aluminum is favored for its lightness combined with high structural strength. However, the performance of these alloys depends directly on the precision of the heat treatment and metallurgical quality. Any defect can alter the safety of your essential parts.

The MIL-A-22771 military specification defines the requirements for aluminum forging and its heat treatments. It imposes strict controls not only on the alloy's chemical composition (2000, 6000, 7000 series) but also on the physical characteristics resulting from the transformation.

At FILAB, we support manufacturers in the ASD supply chain with the control and qualification of their parts according to MIL-A-22771, with a clear goal: to ensure the reliability of your technical and industrial decisions.

MIL-A-22771: a reference standard for aluminum forging

Compliance control according to MIL-A-22771

The MIL-A-22771 specification requires rigorous validation of "material health". FILAB intervenes to guarantee that the forging and quenching processes have not altered the intrinsic properties of the aluminum.

It is specifically used to:

  • Verify chemical composition of alloys (Aluminum-Copper, Aluminum-Zinc...) by ICP-OES.
  • Perform metallographic analysis to validate grain structure and check for the absence of overheating (incipient melting) due to poorly controlled heat treatment.
  • Analyze inclusion cleanliness to ensure the part has no internal defects that could initiate cracks.

In the Aerospace and Defense industries, compliance with MIL-A-22771 has a direct impact on:

  • Final mechanical strength of structural and fuselage elements.
  • Corrosion resistance (notably intergranular corrosion).
  • In-service behavior of strategic components subjected to high fatigue stress.

Our FAQ

What types of parts are covered by MIL-A-22771?

It covers all aluminum forgings, whether open die forging (hand forging) or die forging (precision forging), intended for applications where structural reliability is paramount.

Why is metallographic examination critical in this standard?

Unlike simple chemical analysis, metallography allows us to see if the metal has "suffered" during forging (excessive grain growth, brittle zones). It is the key examination to validate the part's robustness.

What is the difference between MIL-A-22771 and AMS 4127?

MIL-A-22771 is a defense standard (Military Specification), whereas AMS 4127 is an aerospace standard (SAE). Both are very similar, but MIL-A-22771 is often specifically required for US or international defense programs.

Can FILAB help in case of non-compliance?

Yes, in the event of an out-of-tolerance result, our experts perform counter-analyses and complementary examinations to identify whether the problem stems from the raw material or a bad thermal cycle.
