What is CODAP?

The CODAP (Code for the construction of non-flame-fired pressure vessels) is a French code developed by the SNCT (Syndicat National de la Chaudronnerie, Tuyauterie et Maintenance Industrielle). It supervises the design, manufacture, inspections and documentation of pressure equipment that is not heated by a direct flame.

The requirements of CODAP standards

CODAP requirements are structured to ensure safety, reliability and regulatory compliance of pressure equipment. These requirements cover all stages: design, manufacturing, inspection and documentation.

Compliant design

The devices must be designed according to rigorous calculation rules, taking into account the maximum allowable pressure, the operating temperature, mechanical stresses, corrosion and fatigue conditions.

Qualified materials

The materials used must be compatible with the requirements of the code, particularly in terms of mechanical resistance, chemical composition and corrosion resistance, and must be subject to complete traceability.

Controlled manufacturing processes

Manufacturing processes must be validated, in particular welding, which requires specific qualifications of procedures (QMOS) and welders (QS).

Mandatory inspection and testing

Non-Destructive Testing shall be carried out at different stages of the manufacturing process, such as visual examination, penetrative inspection, X-ray inspection, ultrasound or magnetic particle inspection, depending on the level of requirement.

A pressure test is mandatory at the end of manufacturing, often a hydraulic test, to check the resistance of the device at a pressure higher than the maximum working pressure.

Documentation and traceability

An information folder must be compiled, containing the plans, material certificates, inspection reports, welding procedures, qualifications and test reports.

Compliance with the European Directive 2014/68/EU

La conformité à la Directive européenne 2014/68/UE (DESP) est intégrée, avec des exigences spécifiques en matière de marquage CE, de contrôle final et d’intervention d’organismes notifiés.

The FILAB laboratory supports you in the analysis according to the CODAP

Why choose FILAB for a CODAP analysis?

Actors in the design, construction, maintenance, operation of nuclear power plants or other energy production systems, you try to follow these best practices through the regular control of your pressure devices not subjected to the flame.

To support you in your efforts, the FILAB laboratory supports you in your chemical analysis according to the guidelines of the CODAP.

FAQ

In which sectors is the CODAP used?

The CODAP is used in sectors such as chemistry, pharmacy, agri-food, energy, water treatment or even biotechnology. It is particularly relevant in contexts where the European PED Directive (2014/68/EU) applies.

Do welders need to be qualified according to the CODAP?

Yes. The CODAP requires that welding procedures (QMOS) and welders (QS) be qualified according to the rules of the code. These qualifications must be documented and controlled.

Is the CODAP an official standard?

No, the CODAP is not a standard in the ISO or EN sense, but a recognized construction code, often required as a technical reference in industrial specifications. It is compatible with the DESP directive.

Can the FILAB laboratory accompany me in a CODAP approach?

Yes. At FILAB, we accompany you throughout the entire analysis chain related to the CODAP:
- Material characterization
- Batch qualification
- Control of welds
- Expertise in case of non-compliance
