As a cosmetics manufacturer, you would like to carry out an analysis and dosage of HEMA and OTP (CAS 75980-60-8) in your varnishes

Who are HEMA and OTP?

HEMA (Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) is a methacrylate monomer widely used in cosmetic products, particularly in semi-permanent nail polishes and UV gels.

It improves product adhesion and flexibility, while ensuring proper polymerization under UV lamps. It presents allergenic risks.

As for OTP (CAS 75980-60-8) (diphenyl trimethylbenzoyl phosphine oxide),
it is a photoinitiator widely used in nail formulations.

It is mainly found in gels and polishes cured under UV or LED lamps.

Its main function is to trigger the polymerization reaction, which ensures fast and efficient curing. Its use improves the strength and durability of products such as sculpting gels, base coats, top coats, and even semi-permanent nail polishes.

Existing regulations regarding HEMA and OTP in varnishes

⚠️Since January 5, 2024, OTP has been officially classified as a CMR 1B substance, indicating a potential risk. This classification will become legally binding in September 2025, leading to its gradual removal from cosmetic formulations, particularly nail products.

The regulations governing methacrylates in cosmetics, particularly HEMA, are based on several directives and regulations:

  • Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009
  • REACH
