Your needs: characterizing metal powders for the aerospace sector

What is a metal powder?

A metal powder is a powder made from metals using different processes:

  • Grinding of solid metal
  • Precipitation of a salt from a solution
  • Thermal decomposition of metal carbonyl (carbonyl process)
  • Solid-state reduction of metal oxide
  • Electrodeposition
  • Atomization of molten metal

Why characterize a metal powder for the aerospace sector?

To achieve consistently high-quality metal components, the properties of metal powders must be carefully analyzed and characterized to ensure good powder flow, good packing and good friction, as well as the best metal composition.

Thus, to guarantee the quality of the parts produced, metal powders must meet many requirements in order to achieve the expected performance.

FILAB supports you in the characterization of metal powders for aerospace

Why choose FILAB for metal powder analysis?

For more than 30 years, our FILAB laboratory has had the experience and the specific analytical equipment to support metallurgy manufacturers today in the characterization of powders using different analytical techniques: XRD, SEM-EDX, BET, laser particle size analysis

The FILAB laboratory is COFRAC ISO 17025 accredited for:

  • specific surface area measurement using the BET method (according to ISO 9277) and laser particle size analysis (according to ISO 13320 in liquid and dry mode),
  • density measurement by helium pycnometry (according to ASTM B923 and ISO 12154),
  • grain size determination (according to ASTM E112 and NF EN ISO 643) for bulk materials.
