Qualification and approval of process fluids and cleaners according to the AIRBUS AIMS 12-10-001 standard

During the assembly, manufacturing and maintenance phases of aircraft structures, the use of inter-operation solvents, cleaners and degreasers is essential. The AIRBUS AIMS 12-10-001 specification governs the safety and analytical performance requirements applicable to these temporary process fluids. It ensures that no chemical residue can adversely affect subsequent metal alloys, coatings or bonded assemblies.

Filab laboratory performs all the safety and technical qualification tests required to have your products added to Airbus’s Qualified Products List (AQPL).

The challenges of the AIRBUS AIMS 12-10-001 standard

Unlike cutting oils, which are covered by the AIMS 12-10-000 standard, the AIMS 12-10-001 standard applies to solvents, degreasers and surface cleaners. A poorly characterized process fluid can cause structural embrittlement or affect the adhesion of paints and glazing.

Qualification according to AIMS 12-10-001 certifies the following key performance characteristics:

Rigorous metal safety: absence of corrosion (immersion, pitting and galvanic corrosion) on aerospace aluminum alloys, titanium and high-strength steels.

No impact on hydrogen embrittlement: critical assessment on high-strength steels.

Safety for non-metallic materials: validation of craze resistance (craze resistance) on acrylics/polycarbonates, absence of elastomer swelling and composite integrity.

Degreasing efficiency and residues: assessment of cleaning power, evaporation rate and the absence of interfering deposits before bonding or painting.

Our AIMS 12-10-001 / AITM test program

We apply Airbus’s official test methods (AITM – Airbus Test Methods) to compile your approval dossier:

Corrosion and Material Compatibility

•

Stress corrosion cracking and embrittlement: validation of compliance for high-strength steels and titanium alloys.

Our FAQ

What types of chemicals fall under AIMS 12-10-001?

This specification covers all surface degreasers (solvent-based or aqueous), inter-operation cleaners, equipment cleaning solvents (paint spray guns), and pre-treatment fluids used before assembly or bonding.

What is the difference between AIMS 12-10-000 and AIMS 12-10-001?

The AIMS 12-10-000 standard is dedicated to machining and cutting fluids (lubrication/cooling during material removal). The AIMS 12-10-001 standard applies to cleaning/surface preparation solvents and degreasers.
