What is the ferrite content of a steel?

The ferrite content is the proportion of ferritic phase present in a stainless steel or metal alloy. It is generally expressed as a percentage (%) or as a ferrite number (FN) and plays a crucial role in the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of materials.

Ferrite testing content mainly concerns stainless steels and their alloys, but it can also be relevant for other metallic materials containing ferritic phases.

Why realise a ferrite testing ?

The ferrite content has a direct influence on the functional properties of the steel – its elasticity, hardness, weldability and magnetism.

Ferrite content is a key parameter in metallurgy, particularly for :

Ensuring mechanical strength

The right ferrite content improves strength and reduces the risk of hot fissuration.

Optimise corrosion resistance

Too low a ferrite content can make the material more sensitive to aggressive environments.

Improving weldability

In austenitic stainless steels, a certain level of ferrite in the welds limits the risk of fissuration.

Resist high temperatures

In some applications, excessive ferrite can lead to hot embrittlement (sigma phase).
